The We the People program curriculum includes the textbook, a resource center, supplemental lesson plans and other Center for Civic Education resources. The curriculum provides upper elementary, middle, and high school students with a course of instruction on the history and principles of the United States constitutional democracy. Critical thinking exercises, problem-solving activities, and cooperative-learning opportunities help develop intellectual and participatory skills while increasing students’ understanding of government institutions and fostering attitudes that students need to participate as effective, responsible citizens.

A new fourth edition of the We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution textbook for upper elementary students is now available. The content and images for the new text have been updated. The teacher’s guide now provides section-by-section suggestions for teaching each lesson.
We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution teaches upper elementary students about government and active citizenship. Students explore the history and principles of American constitutional democracy through critical thinking, cooperative learning, and a unique and engaging culminating activity: the simulated congressional hearing.

The We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution textbook has been newly revised for 2017. Now in its third edition, We the People teaches middle school students about civics, government, and active citizenship. The textbook, composed of 6 units and 30 lessons uses critical-thinking exercises, cooperative-learning and a simulated congressional hearing culminating activity to teach the history and principles of constitutional democracy. We the People is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Reading and Writing and the National Standards for Civics and Government.

The revised and updated fourth print edition of We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution features new text, images, exercises, and Supreme Court cases to ensure that the next generation of Americans has the intellectual tools they need to become informed and engaged citizens. We the People gives high school students a firm understanding of government and citizenship. Students explore the history and principles of constitutional democracy through critical-thinking exercises, cooperative-learning and participation in a simulated congressional hearing. The We the People student textbook contains six units and 39 lessons. The updated teacher’s guide contains a step-by-step walkthrough of the student book, interactive teaching strategies, reproducible handouts, and a multiple choice end-of-course assessment.
